Nubya Garcia has never been an artist easily contained. The London-born saxophonist, composer and bandleader came of age immersed in jazz, studying under the revered pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. Yet to frame her solely within the lineage of British jazz would be to miss the point entirely. 

It is through albums such as Source (2020) and, more recently, Odyssey (2024) that Garcia’s wider creative language truly unfurls. Hers is a sound that glides between jazz, classical orchestration, dub, R&B and broken beat — not as a collision of genres, but as a seamless, instinctive conversation. Each composition feels exploratory, driven by an insistence on inhabiting multiple disciplines at once, and a refusal to accept the arbitrary boundaries that so often attempt to define them.
