FG CHIC : The Harrington Jacket, the British Classic Making a Stylish Summer Comeback
Sometimes, all it takes is a single silhouette to transcend the decades. This summer, the Harrington jacket has once again emerged as one of the most coveted staples in the modern men's wardrobe. Sitting at the crossroads of British heritage, Ivy League elegance and music culture, this lightweight jacket proves that true classics never really leave the spotlight.

Created in England during the 1930s by Baracuta with its iconic G9 model, the Harrington was originally designed for upper-class golfers. Its stand up collar, ribbed cuffs and waistband, together with its unmistakable Royal Stewart tartan lining, quickly established it as a garment that was both practical and refined. Over the years, it left the golf course behind and made its way onto the streets, where it was embraced by successive generations.

It was during the 1960s that the jacket acquired the name by which it is now universally known. Rodney Harrington, played by Ryan O'Neal in the American television series Peyton Place, was frequently seen wearing a Baracuta jacket. London's style conscious crowd adopted the reference, championed in particular by John Simons and his celebrated Ivy Shop. The "Harrington jacket" had officially been born.
Before long, it became the unofficial uniform of Britain's youth subcultures. Mods, skinheads, punks and later Britpop enthusiasts all made it their own, while cultural icons such as James Dean and Steve McQueen helped cement its legendary status. Few garments have moved so effortlessly between Hollywood cinema, London's music scene and the timeless preppy wardrobe.
Nearly a century after its creation, the Harrington returns with undiminished relevance. Recently spotted on Brooklyn Beckham and Aliocha Schneider at the Jacquemus Autumn/Winter 2025–2026 show, it now appears in understated shades ranging from beige to navy, favouring clean lines and quiet luxury. Yet it is the vibrant red version that is stealing the spotlight this season. In New York, Dua Lipa recently reaffirmed the jacket's must-have status by wearing a Ralph Lauren Harrington, injecting this quintessentially British classic with a distinctly contemporary edge.
