Tribute to Kavinsky: French Touch Loses One of Its Greatest Icons

The French electronic music scene is mourning the loss of one of its most influential artists. Kavinsky, the iconic figure behind the legendary track Nightcall, has passed away at the age of 50. The musician, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, was found dead at his Paris home on Tuesday evening. The news was confirmed by the Paris Public Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday, July 29.

Emerging in the mid-2000s, Kavinsky quickly established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in French electronic music. Alongside Daft Punk, Justice, Cassius and DJ Mehdi, he helped shape the global identity of the French Touch movement, blending synthwave, electro and a cinematic aesthetic inspired by the 1980s.

His signature track Nightcall became a global cult classic after featuring in Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 film Drive. More recently, it enjoyed a remarkable revival during the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Kavinsky performed alongside Belgian singer Angèle and the French band Phoenix at the Stade de France, delivering one of the ceremony's most memorable moments.

The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. At this stage, investigators have reported no evidence of suspicious circumstances.

Beyond his acclaimed productions, Kavinsky leaves behind a lasting influence on generations of artists. His dark, elegant and retro-futuristic universe played a major role in elevating French electronic music onto the international stage.

FG CHIC pays tribute to a visionary artist whose music will continue to resonate across generations, dance floors and cinema screens. His legacy remains one of the finest expressions of the French Touch.
